    FAQS :

Does this have any issues connecting to iPhones? I just paid $200 for a netgear and it wouldn't connect to my phone or printer, and it also keeps dropping connections.

Answer: I just got an ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC3100 Gigabit Router (RT-AC88U) a month ago, and it's amazing. It connects flawlessly with all five of my family's iPhone 6s and my wireless printer.

Is it necessary to flash this router in order to programme my VPN?

To use this router, you don't need to do anything with your VPN. The router offers its own basic VPN option, which you will not use because if you already have a VPN service, it will almost certainly have a more comprehensive feature set. After you've set up the router, simply use your computer as usual. Regardless, all users should flash this router with the Merlin flash, so do so. It's extremely simple; just watch some YouTube videos. I use a VPN service, and my usage was completely undetectable. You don't need to do anything if you've already flashed with Merlin.

Is this something that can be hung on the wall?

Answer: I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, but YES, it can be mounted on the wall. Simply google the model of this router for a backside picture, and you'll notice the small rubber feet (which, yes, can be removed to access the chassis screw), but the cutout(s) that the removable rubber feet fit into are cut in such a way that the router will hang just fine when you affix a proper set of screws to the wall.

Is this the same as the ac88u?

Answer: The AC88u is essentially a four port router with an additional four port switch added to the cabinet, therefore connecting an unmanaged gb switch to the four port router to accommodate the extra lan demands will not cost you anything. If you don't daisy-chain many switches, the additional latency will be around 100 microseconds or 1/10 millisecond, which is completely insignificant.

I'm considering purchasing the router, but I'm concerned about all of the poor reviews from those who have had connectivity troubles. Do you have any suggestions?

Purchase the Netgear X10/ Over the course of about two years, my ASUS 5300 was sent back to the factory four times. After they couldn't fix mine and keep it working, they finally shipped me a new one in the package. They even offered me a refurbished one, but it had issues immediately away. By that time, I'd given up and purchased a Netgear x10, which has never caused me any problems. So when the ASUS unit arrived brand new in a box, I put it in storage and would never use it again since I don't trust the ASUS 5300. Its antennae are rubbish, and the antenna connectors on the board have come free or aren't connected to the board at all. As a result, I'll never buy an ASUS router!

With low to moderate usage, how many devices can reliably maintain a connection? It'll be used for a small outdoor festival that I'm planning.

The number of devices is determined by how they are connected and what they do. Wireless devices require both the CPU and the radio resources, whereas wired devices simply use the router's CPU to send traffic. Because this router has a fairly strong CPU, I expect it to handle wired devices effectively (albeit it is targeted for home/small business use, so there may be undisclosed software constraints). Because there are so many unknown variables in radio, it's difficult to forecast. I wouldn't recommend having more than roughly 15 active wireless devices on this router, but it should be able to connect to a larger number of devices if they are primarily idle and evenly distributed throughout the three bands. It also relies on the type of data used by the devices. If the webpages are simple and do not contain a lot of images or video, you can have more devices than if they consume a lot of bandwidth.
