Which do you think is better, the uv-82hp or the bf-f8hp?
Answer: I own them both. On the whole, I prefer the feel of the UV-82HP. The same goes for the keypad. The BF-F8HP has an "overstuffed" feeling about it. The UV-82HP has the advantage of dual PTT: toggle up to transmit on A and toggle down to transmit on B. Excellent for dual-channel applications. The UV-82HP has one disadvantage: you must reboot to switch between channel and VFO mode. I don't do it often, but it irritates me. Menus are nearly identical. I've taken on the role of "radio man" for our Boy Scout Camporees, and the BF-F8HP has a really excellent bulk charger. One base with six or eight radios. One power and one base for a "field deployment" sure beats 6 to 8 bases, cables, and power warts. In addition to anything else, I've been acquiring additional BF-F8HP, which the staff is familiar with. I really wish the UV-82HP had a bulk charging base.
Is it possible to turn the backlight on and off manually? The automated on/off feature drives me insane.
Answer: You may lengthen the backlight timeout using CHIRP.

Can this radio be programmed with fire and EMS alert tones?
Answer: Numerous public safety users continue to use VHF and UHF analog in many locations. There is NO NEED TO MOVE TO P-25, merely to a restricted band. There are numerous advantages to P-25 and much more to P-25 phase 2 trunking. However, the cost of the systems is prohibitively expensive in many locations. For around $80,000, a local county may replace all radios and repeaters. For around $150,000, they can upgrade to a VHF P-25. For around $3 million, you can upgrade to a 7/800 P-25 phase 2 trunked system.
Can these be configured to transmit and receive on GMRS 462 MHz?
Yes, but even if you have a GMRS license, this is not an authorized radio to operate. The GMRS-V1 is a valid Part 95E variation of this radio. The use of commercial Part 90 radios for GMRS is a bit of a gray area. It's not legal because they're not 95E, but the practice of looking for Part 90 radios that meet or exceed 95E criteria arose due to a shortage of viable Part 95E radios other than the blister pack 'hybrid' radios. The FCC has acknowledged the practice, and several GMRS licensees engage in it. In my cars, I have a Kenwood TK-3180 HT, TK-8360, and TK-8180 mobiles, and a TK-890 mobile radio as a base station. The UV-82C falls a bit short in that sense, but if you use one of them and leave the VFO mode locked out, you'll have a far better case for claiming you tried to obey the spirit of the legislation than you would with the UV-82HP, which has no Part acceptance at all.

Answer: Contrary to popular belief, these are lawful as long as you secure your GMRS license, which costs $70 and is valid for ten years, in order to operate on GMRS frequencies. With a license, you can operate up to 50 watts on specified GMRS frequencies. These radios may also be programmed at three different power levels, so that no matter what frequency you're on, you'll be under legal transmission power limits. These are fantastic radios with crystal-clear communications for our church security crew. Assure that you operate on low-power FRS frequencies without a license and on higher-power GRMS frequencies with a license. If you don't have a ham license, stay off the ham frequencies.
What type of range can I expect?
Answer: On open land, you will receive roughly 10 kilometers with the provided antenna. Approximately 5 kilometers in suburban settings. A kilometer or two in metropolitan situations. A little more than 10 kilometers on a boat. On open terrain, the Nagoya extended antenna may cover around 20 kilometers. However, if you put an external antenna on a building's roof, you can quadruple that range! Power does extend the range. However, antennas enhance range significantly more than power.
I recently received the BF-F8HP and installed the Nagoya NA-771 from my UV-5R. This antenna irritates the 8HP. Why? Only receiving half of the messages...
Answer: I'm not sure what the issue is other than that something has happened to the antenna. Does it function properly on your UV5R? I would recommend obtaining a Signal Stick antenna; they are excellent, low-cost antennas. Oh, and the 771 should work on your new radio if it works on your UV5F. I own both.
Is the battery the same as the one used in the UV-5R?
Answer: It uses the BL-5 battery and is compatible with UV-5R batteries and accessories.
Can you use it as a walkie-talkie? As in, me and someone else in the woods conversing?
The answer is yes. And don't believe people who say you'll be penalized by the FCC. The FCC will not come after you until you become drunk and sing, whistle, or burp the Star Spangled Banner. Radio waves are the property of the people. I reside in a very populated region and routinely monitor the frequencies, yet I very rarely, if ever, come across other individuals utilizing them. I've been listening to a popular repeater in the Washington, D.C., area all day. And the same few people use it the majority of the time, and conversations rarely last more than twenty minutes. I rarely transmit using my radio. I've also requested radio inspections on other frequencies. However, only the repeater frequency has elicited a response, and the great majority of the time, others can hardly hear me (I'm using a 10W Baofeng BF-H6 with a Nagoya 24J antenna or a TYT8000D radio with a Retevis 20W antenna). Good luck getting the FCC to listen to you! Maybe the Russian Embassy could, but seriously, when was the last time the FCC penalized someone for using a walkie-talkie without a license? Don't listen to the FCC-ham Technition Class cops. They're the only ones who could find you, and most of them have more important things to do. If you use your walkie-talkies wisely, you will not meet an untimely demise. Only your friend will be able to hear you.
Can the radio be set to standby and triggered via DTMF tones? I'd like to use the radio as a pager for the fire department.
Answer: None of our BF-F8HP devices are FCC Part 90-approved. If you want to use this radio as a 2-tone or 5-tone fire department radio, I don't think it supports that function. If you wish to achieve that, you should check out various other TYT model radios that support 2-tone and 5-tone settings.
