    FAQS :

How many threads per inch (tex) can this machine accommodate?

I have not examined every thread. The T-40 is safe. With a suitable topstitching needle, topstitching thread is also acceptable. Also, when using heavier threads, the top tension should be decreased, and the bobbin tension may also require adjustment. Typically, I have two bobbin cases on hand, one for T-50 and the other for specialty or stronger threads. I just use this sewing machine for travel or simple straight stitching.

Can Leather be sewn with this machine?

Yes, it is possible to stitch wood. It is really potent.

Can it stitch fleece, polyester, and rayon?

Answer: We purchased the machine for our daughter, who sews dog collars consisting of two layers of cotton, hemp, or polyester webbing as well as two layers of beautiful ribbon. It sews through each layer without difficulty. She has also successfully sewed two layers of jacket lining. You may want to visit a Janome dealer, who may have machines available for testing.

What is this machine's weight? I am seeking for a portable device to bring to class.

Answer: it's not too heavy, but I wouldn't recommend carrying it too far. Regardless, I bought it after reading all the hoopla about it; don't waste your money; buy a name brand. The first sewing I did was on a piece of cotton with a straight stitch, and it worked fine. However, as soon as I switched to a zig zag stitch, it kept jamming up so much, and the jam is inside on the lift bar, which means you have to unscrew the panels to get to the jam. I got so fed up with it that I haven't used it since, but the 30-day return period has passed, so I am stuck with an expensive piece of junk.

    Can it stitch leather?

It can sew leather if the right needle, presser foot, thread, and stitch settings are used for the leather's weight and thickness. Singer's website has a PDF file that can be downloaded and used as a guide for which needles, feet, and settings to use for sewing different types and weights of fabric, leather, vinyl, etc. Google "singer accessories" if you can't find Singer's website.

I've never used a sewing machine before. How do I know what kind of needles this machine needs?

Answer: The needle for your machine is important. For leather, you need leather needles, and for thicker fabrics, you need shorter needles. There are two numbers on each needle. The second number is what most people don't know. It is the size of the hole. If you are young and can see 20/10, this number won't matter. But if you're old like us, it makes a BIG difference. 118 is a great hole size for those of us whose eyes are getting worse with age. Don't forget that your needle will wear down. If you're making masks, if you sew through folds, the needle will wear out faster. We've found that it's well worth the cost to keep a needle sharp.

Is this something a beginner should be able to use? I heard that the speed of sewing is too fast for a beginner.

Answer: Two beginners were able to use this machine at our house without any problems. The speed of the pedal can be changed, so you can go very slowly by controlling it with your foot.

Will this machine blindstitch neoprene for a wetsuit that is 3 to 4 mm thick?

The Singer 4452 is a home sewing machine. By lifting the presser foot lifter, the Singer model 4452 presser foot moves up until there is about a half-inch of space between the needle plate and the bottom of the presser foot. The presser foot will stay at this height until the lever is moved down. If you push the lever up further, it will go to a height of about 5/8 inch. However, if you let go of the lever, it won't stay at that height. Fabrics made of neoprene can be anywhere from 1mm to 7mm thick. About 0.2 mm is usually made up of nylon or polyester, so the rest depends on how much rubber you have. Most home sewing machines can handle 1-2mm just fine. It depends on the machine, but 3mm is about 1/8 of an inch. Anything 4mm and up is only recommended for industrial sewing machines. The amount the presser foot is lifted may not be the problem. If the layers are too thick, the tension will break and the stitch will not be right.
