    FAQS :

Is this machine capable of handling the thickness of denim seams?

Yes, indeed! There are numerous videos on YouTube showing them going through 8 layers of denim. I create bags and it handles cork, vinyl, eight layers of fabric plus interfacing, and four layers of home decor fabric like butter. It's a fantastic little machine!

What about the upkeep? How are the parts oiled and cleaned?

Answer: I recommend having it serviced once a year. For more information and excellent offers, please call the store at 800-442-8227 and ask for our sewing specialist.

Is this machine capable of sewing sunbrella and upholstery fabric? I'm now employing the Singer Heavy Duty.

Answer: My machine is quite new, but I produced some denim overalls using it and they turned out beautifully. I also realised that transitioning from light to heavyweight material was simple. I have not experimented with Sunbrella. Go to YouTube and you'll see a variety of videos on how to use the machine that Janome has posted.

Is this machine capable of sewing delicate fabrics? searching for a machine capable of sewing light to heavy fabrics

Answer: I got mine for the heavy duty aspect and use my old New Home 6000 for everything else. I'm just used to the ease of use of my old computerised machine, which I've had for approximately 30 years. However, there is no reason why this machine cannot also sew light materials. Because the presser foot tension varies, using the suitable needle size for lighter fabrics should be no problem.

Is it capable of sewing leather?

It can sew leather if the correct needle, presser foot, thread, and stitch settings are used for the weight/thickness of the leather. Singer's website has an accessory brochure (PDF file) that may be downloaded and used as a reference for the needles, foot, and settings to use for sewing different materials and weights of fabric, leather, vinyl, and so forth. If you can't find Singer's website, try searching for "singer accessories."

I'm new to sewing machines; how do I know what kind of needles I'll need for this machine?

Answer: Your machine's needle does matter; leather needles for leather, shorter needles for thicker textiles. Each needle is labelled with two numbers. The second number is something that most people are unaware of. It is the size of the hole. This value is meaningless if you have 20/10 vision and are relatively young. It does, however, make a HUGE impact if you are as old as we are. For those of us with ageing eyes, 118 is the ideal hole size. Keep in mind that your needle will eventually dull. Sewing through creases on masks will cause it to dull faster. We've discovered that keeping a sharp needle is well worth the cost.

Is this appropriate for a novice to use? I read elsewhere that the sewing speed is too rapid for a beginner.

Answer: Two novices utilised this machine without incident in our home; it was enjoyable. The pedal has variable speed, allowing you to go very slowly with minimal foot control.

Will this machine blindstitch neoprene 3-4mm thick for a wetsuit?

The Singer model 4452 is a domestic machine. By lifting the presser foot lifter, the Singer model 4452 presser foot elevates to a 12 inch gap from the needle plate to the bottom of the presser foot. The presser foot will remain at this position until the lever is released. By pushing the lever up further, it will reach a height of approximately 5/8 inch; but, if the lever is released, it will not remain at that height. Neoprene fabrics range in thickness from 1mm to 7mm. The nylon or polyester normally accounts for roughly 0.2mm, leaving the rest up to the amount of rubber available. Most household sewing machines can cope with 1-2mm thread. 3mm (about 1/8 inch) is equipment dependent, and anything 4mm and above is only advised for industrial sewing machines. Although the amount of presser foot lift may not be an issue, if the layers are too thick, the tension may release and the stitch will not form properly.
