This function is absent from the TV for which we bought the device; the output volume is constant. She must thus get up in order to adjust the speakers' level. I'd have to double-check with her, but I think the remote's "mute" button still functions. Depending on your TV, an adaptor could be required to connect it.
If so, is there a selection switch that allows both inputs to be played simultaneously? Or must both be disconnected simultaneously while using one?
The answer is that they both need to be hooked up. No selection switch is present. They are for computers, and most of them, in my opinion, only have one audio out connection. Consider using common bookshelf speakers that you can connect to a switch.
