    Can I print it using a USB drive?

    Answer: You CANNOT insert a USB drive into this printer and print from it. It contains a USB connector that allows you to connect it to a computer and print using a USB cable. The prior response to this question was deceptive.

    So I'm looking for printer ink. Which ink have you used that was suitable for this printer, even if it wasn't a Brother?

    Answer: If you use anything other than a Brother cartridge, you must swap the chip from the Brother cartridge to the generic cartridge. They all claim to be fully compatible, however without the Brother brand chip, they will not work. The process of switching the chips is quick. Simply keep the Brother chip and transfer it to the new generic cartridge everytime you change toner.

    Is it possible to fax without a landline?

    If a landline is unavailable, you could try using your computer, but not a cell phone.

    What kind of toner?

    Answer: Because it is a Brother, I recommend that you look into any of the online toner cartridges (non-Brother, to save heaps of money) TN 760 (high yield), which is what we use. For almost all of my toner cartridges, I choose LD Products (HP, Brother).

I can just say that I've used my Brother printer for a number of years and have never had an issue with a dark background. Every time, it prints perfectly. Perhaps your toner isn't working properly. I would suggest contacting Brother or a local repair person to see if they can assist you.
