Matilda (Rommba 690) is run once or twice a day.
It works perfectly.
Every time it runs, we have to clean the brushes and empty the bin, although this only takes around 4 or 5 minutes.
One word of caution: if you have a dog who poops inside, make SURE you find it before your Roomba.
It took approximately an hour to clean up the first time, cleaning the carpet and scouring, and finding everything in and on Matilda.
Except for the excrement issue, which is NOT the fault of the Roomba (they might create a model with automatic feces detection?! ), we are entirely satisfied with ours.
It may not be as powerful as a typical vacuum, but because it runs every day (sometimes twice), it keeps up with hair, fur, kitty litter, and debris, and cleaning is simple.

I have Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring and a black area rug with white swirls.
I had no trouble making the change with the 690.
I'm not sure if the white swirls are helping or not.
The carpeting is almost entirely black.
It does occasionally go into spot cleaning mode, but it has never become stuck and has always cleaned the rug.

Anything less than series 600 is a pretty old model with a non-LION battery that I recommend you avoid.
Traditional brushes are used in the 600-700 series, whereas low-maintenance rubber rollers are used in the 800-900 variants.
WIFI/App support is available on all x90 models, including the 690, 890, and 900.
The iRobot random algorithm navigation is used in the 800 series and lower.
The 900 series (the most expensive) uses mapping navigation and is ideal for large rooms (3000 sqf+).
