    FAQS :

When it reaches a predetermined temperature, does it turn off?

Unfortunately, with models made in 2020 or after, the fan shuts off when it reaches the predetermined temperature. I've used these AC units for years. I recently bought a new one, and I'm not satisfied that the fan shuts off along with the AC condenser. I found a solution and use these in my room every single day of the year. A couple of hours before bed, I set the temperature to 61. The AC unit was then set to operate on a fan when I went to bed.

    What process removes the water?

Get a 4500-square-foot dehumidifier with a pump if draining continues to be a problem! I cannot stress this enough: "WITH PUMP." Even though my dehumidifier is down the hallway, it still dehumidifies the entire house, which greatly improves the efficiency of any air conditioner. Every 16 hours or so, the pump turns on and immediately pumps the 4 gallons of collected water into my bathroom sink (or tub). The humidity is still removed by the A/C, but not nearly enough for you to need to empty it manually.

Do you know whether a kit for a sliding side window like this is available?

Since my window is too large for the included window kit, I purchased an 8-inch board from Home Depot and cut holes for the two hoses using the end caps as a guide. To prevent heat from leaking in on the sides, I painted it first and then applied a foam seal strip along the edges. It performs admirably.

Why draw in warm air to cool? I live in South Florida. How can using outdoor air make the unit more efficient?

If you use cooler inside air to cool the condenser, the air is then vented out of a single hose. Your home is not an airless space. Hot exterior air seeps into your home through all the cracks and crevices, replacing the vented cool air. Since the condenser is using cooler air to cool itself, the single-hose system provides more local cooling for the same amount of electricity; however, this benefit is negated by the hot air that is leaking in from the outside. Which is more effective overall requires intricate computations.

Does this device have a noise-dB rating?

Insight: I'm clueless. I read the instructions, but I couldn't find any information about the decibel rating. My recommendation is to get in touch with them directly by phone at 866-WHYNTER or by email at service@whynter.com. Although the portable air conditioner can be heard running in my office, which is less than 300 square feet in size and has ceilings that are around 8 feet above the floor, it does not interfere with or disrupt my regular phone or in-person customer interactions. I can still clearly hear people even with the fan set to its highest setting. I've dealt with a few over the past few years, and most portable air conditioners produce some form of noise, but the volume of the noise has never disturbed me. It's now just background noise.

Platinum and black are the colors being advertised. The actual color of this model when I received it was black and dark gray. Why is that so?

Response: Really? maybe 50 colors of gray. You can find a variety of dark to light gray colors by searching for "platinum color shades" online. My color is gray, but it leans more toward light than dark.

What is the procedure for removing water?

Answer: The drain port on these units is only 3 inches off the ground, near the bottom. They recommend rolling the unit outside and, if necessary, opening the drain to allow the water to pour out on the sidewalk or driveway someplace you don't mind. That obviously necessitates disconnecting the window vents, etc., which is inconvenient. When used as a "heat pump," it will require frequent draining; therefore, I've installed a "condensation pump" unit (by Little Giant or a similar brand) to pump the water into a bucket as needed (which I can empty every other day or so). Other models, such as the 122DHP, are similar but feature a pump to remove water. That is a characteristic you should think about if you intend to use it for heating and/or are concerned about the need to drain frequently. Otherwise, they claim that in regular AC mode, most of the water collecting on the cool coils will drain to the hot ones, evaporate, and blow out the window with hot air passing through the vent tubes. That's excellent for that mode, but it'll only be used half the time. There is so much to think about before spending $500 on something like this.

(Conflicting reviews) I'm really perplexed about this unit. I need to know if it is quiet (for a bedroom), if it will endure more than one season, and if it is hefty. TY

Answer: I've had my Whynter SH 1400 BTU for 7 years. Will I purchase another brand? (No way) Simply crank your fan down to cool your space, and it will be quieter than a window unit. With a weight of 88 pounds, a husband and wife can simply lift it from one level to another. The large casters make it simple for anyone to move it across a floor. This device is a smart choice until the freon transition is complete and the costs of new heat pumps come down again. (In my humble but frugal view)

We installed this in our little server room, and it does not provide adequate cooling. Is there anything more powerful than this? We need to freeze the room, but this can only do 67F.

Why would you want to freeze a server room? Condensation will form, which is extremely harmful to your equipment. 60–70 degrees is ideal for a server room, which you're currently achieving at 67. As long as your RH is between 45 and 65%, you're fine as is.

What are the dimensions of the intake and exhaust hoses?

Answer: I just spoke with Whynter customer service. I was advised that all of their units had been upgraded from 5" to 6" (5.9" to be exact) hoses. Now I have to return the ARC142BX, which I received last week and really enjoyed—except for the massive 6" hose that comes out the back. The bent takes up more space than I have. I was going to return it and replace it with this ARC-14S since the hoses angle upward from the back of the device without having to bend up. But I'd have to disassemble and reinstall the window kit I worked so hard on last year (to replace the 5" hoses on the previous ARC-12S). Meanwhile, I'm still sweltering in Houston. This unnecessary alteration irritates me greatly. And I'm wondering if the larger hoses have anything to do with the recent negative feedback on this item.

Is a window kit that can handle up to 60" vertical sliding windows available?

CLEAR (unobstructed) is the correct answer. CHOICE OF VIEW: Purchase a sheet of transparent acrylic (called "plexi glass") at Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, or Amazon that is at least 6" wide (and the length or height required for "your" window) and that should be about 0.25" thick (or close to that). NOTE: Some come in 0.22" sizes, which is also OK. Use masking tape ("frog tape") before cutting or drilling on your "cut lines" (not on the entire sheet). This will keep the wood from splintering or splitting. Cut it to the size you want with a table saw, circular saw, or jig saw. For the holes, use a hole saw drill bit and an electric drill (TIP: start your drill in reverse to avoid jumping about). Otherwise, trace the window kit's circle onto the masking tape. Drill a hole for the jigsaw blade to fit into using a standard drill bit and a jigsaw.
